"Maria Full of Grace" (2004) is a thought-provoking and deeply intriguing drama starring Catalina Sandino Moreno as Maria Álvarez, a young Colombian woman who is forced to accept a dangerous stint as a drug mule.
Soon after quitting her dead-end job at a rural plantation, Maria learns that she is pregnant by her boyfriend Juan (Wilson Guerrero)—but is disinterested in building any sort of life with him. Catching a ride to Bogota in search of a brighter future, she learns from her driver of an opportunity to transport cocaine to America in exchange for considerable reward. Sensing undeniable opportunity, she embraces this perilous assignment—an ordeal that will test the sheer limits of her fortitude and resolve.
Written and directed by American filmmaker Joshua Marston ("The Forgiveness of Blood", "Come Sunday"), "Maria Full of Grace" is an unflinching tale of tension and intrigue, delivered with enormous empathy for Maria and her fellow couriers. Young Sandino Moreno shines in her understated yet deeply humanistic role, helping to deliver an authentic depiction of real-world exploitation and one woman's remarkable self-determination.
