Gone Girl (2014) is a twisty and absorbing psychological thriller starring Ben Affleck as Nick Dunne and Rosamund Pike as Amy Dunne, a married couple residing in small-town Missouri. Having relocated from New York City to support Nick's dying mother, the couple has grown increasingly distant over time, until Amy suddenly disappears without a trace.

On the morning of their fifth wedding anniversary, Nick returns home to find that Amy has vanished, with signs of a struggle inside the house suggesting foul play. As the investigation unfolds, Nick becomes the prime suspect with the police, while the media begins to paint him as a villain suspected of murder. The scrutiny intensifies, and cracks in Nick and Amy’s seemingly perfect marriage begin to surface, including odd behavior by Nick and mounting inconsistencies in his story. As the pressure builds, Nick tries to prove his innocence while grappling with his own personal secrets — all while the mystery of Amy's disappearance grows deeper, with twisting perceptions and loyalties at every turn.

Based on the bestselling novel by Gillian Flynn (who also wrote the screenplay) and directed by David Fincher (Fight Club, Zodiac), Gone Girl is an astute exploration of media sensationalism. Flynn and Fincher delve deep into the facades people maintain in relationships and the dark extremes to which people can go under the worst of circumstances. Chilling, stylish, and often unsettling, Gone Girl succeeds as a unique genre thriller, meticulously crafted and layered with the brand of social commentary typical of Fincher's signature style.
