'Edward Scissorhands': A Boldly Whimsical Fantasy About the Misadventures of an Artificial Humanoid

Movie poster for Edward Scissorhands (1990)

Edward Scissorhands (1990) is a darkly comical fantasy film starring Johnny Depp as the titular anomaly—an unfinished artificial human left with scissors for hands. The film tells the story of how Edward is taken in by a suburban family and ultimately falls in love with their teenage daughter Kim (Winona Ryder).

The storyline is introduced as a bedtime tale told grandmother-to-granddaughter, detailing the legend of a man-made creature with hands made of scissors, built by an inventor (Vincent Price) living in a large, dark mansion. After the inventor's death, Edward is rescued by door-to-door Avon saleswoman Peg Boggs (Dianne Wiest) and brought to town to experience life within their quaint community. Edward's unique appearance and talents initially make him a fascination amongst the town's citizens, though his eccentricities ultimately lead to undue misunderstandings and escalating calamities.

Co-written and directed by Tim Burton (Batman, Beetlejuice), Edward Scissorhands is a visually stunning escapade, replete with gothic sets, colorful costumes and imaginative effects that contribute to its "Burtonesque" stylings. Johnny Depp shines as the gentle and vulnerable Edward, while the palpable chemistry he shares with Ryder adds immeasurably to the film's emotional core. In its exploration of acceptance, prejudice and perseverance, it's a moving portrayal of a unique individual seeking his one true place in the world.
