Crimson Tide (1995) is an intense and absorbing military thriller starring Gene Hackman as Captain Frank Ramsey, commanding officer of the USS Alabama, a nuclear-powered Navy submarine. When Russian rebel leader Vladimir Radchenko threatens nuclear war, the Alabama is dispatched to the region with orders to launch a preemptive strike if Radchenko proceeds with fueling his missiles.

In preparation for the mission, the seasoned Ramsey selects Lieutenant Commander Ron Hunter (Denzel Washington) as his new executive officer. Hunter is a brilliant strategist, but his lack of combat experience immediately creates tension between him and his battle-hardened captain. As the Alabama patrols the dark waters of the North Atlantic, they receive a directive ordering them to launch their missiles—yet a subsequent attack by a Russian submarine damages their communications and leaves them without confirmation. Ramsey believes the order remains valid and insists on launching, while the more cautious Hunter demands verification before initiating a nuclear strike. This disagreement sparks a conflict that escalates into a full-scale mutiny, leading to a climactic standoff of fierce contention and extraordinary intensity.

Written by Michael Schiffer (with additional dialogue by Quentin Tarantino) and directed by Tony Scott (Top Gun, True Romance), Crimson Tide is a taut and thrilling military thriller. Hackman and Washington are extraordinary in their roles as disparate military commanders immersed in an increasingly desperate tête-à-tête, the fate of millions hanging in the balance. It's a razor-sharp exploration of leadership, duty and immense responsibility, highlighting the potential for human error and the importance of critical thinking in the face of extreme pressure.
