'Bone Tomahawk': A Gritty Western Horror Film About a Sheriff and His Posse Battling Cannibalistic Cave Dwellers

Movie poster for Bone Tomahawk

Bone Tomahawk (2015) is a unique and gritty Western horror film set during the 1890s in the small Western town of Bright Hope. The film stars Kurt Russell as Sheriff Franklin Hunt, the town's constable who comes into direct conflict with a tribe of cannibalistic "troglodyte" cave dwellers.

The storyline follows the abduction of the Sheriff's deputy and the daughter of the town doctor Arthur O'Dwyer (Patrick Wilson), by the troglodytes, and the efforts of Hunt and a small posse to rescue them from imminent death. Hunt, O'Dwyer, gunslinger John Brooder (Matthew Fox), and Deputy Chicory (Richard Jenkins) set out to locate the valley the troglodytes inhabit, running afoul of raiders and thieves along the course of their journey. Ultimately confronted by the fearsome cannibal tribe deep in the foothills, Hunt and his companions are forced to confront their own mortality in the most frightful manner.

Written and directed by S. Craig Zahler (Brawl in Cell Block 99, Dragged Across Concrete) in his directorial debut, Bone Tomahawk is an often gruesome yet remarkably well-constructed tale of intrigue. Zahler employs his trademark brand of deliberate pacing to build tension and an imminent sense of doom while subverting the Western genre with darker, more brutal tones. It's a challenging film that offers an unflinching portrayal of violence, isolation, and despair in the harshest and most unforgiving of environments.
